Match Report: Rob Slater (Temporary while Mike is still away on holiday)
Hi all, Match report from this
week's guest editor Rob Slater – (Rudgie's step-dad)
Apologies for the delay with this… lost my notes so memory and my imagination
may have run wild! – this is the chopped version – you really do not want to see
the draft !! - go and get yourself a brew, settle down and begin reading… and
reading…ZZZzzzzzzzzzzzz.
Apologies also for any typo’s or incorrect names etc, incidentally my goal
timings are in ‘Fergie time’ and my recollection of facts is in ‘Wenger-vision’
This was a strange one to report on; a 5-3 win is what the records books will
say but I can’t quite work out if it was the extra hour in bed or over
confidence but it was a nightmare start from the boys, lack of concentration
from front to back and we were immediately under pressure, resulting in a goal
for Chapel after only 4 minutes – it was a shock to everyone, including Chapel
!!!
The reaction from the lads was magnificent and immediate (I think this was the
first time we have been a goal down in any game this season?) as we tore into
Chapel Town from the restart and some good link up play from midfield to the
strikers almost paid off with a neat control-turn-shot from Rudgie, which just
lacked enough power to really trouble the keeper. Confidence seemed to be
growing although Chapel (aka Stoke City) were still making good use of
throw-ins, which we just could not get to grips with.
James was beginning to enjoy himself. On 10 minutes, a mesmerising run down the
left saw him beat 27 players, 2 mums, 2 dads, 3 cars and a pensioner walking his
dog, and still manage to find Rudgie with a great ball which was hit first time
…GOAL, screamer into the roof of the net 1-1. GAME ON.
More ‘Stoke City’ tactics and an over enthusiastic Chapel linesman saw us
struggle to make any headway. More indecision from yet another long throw-in and
somehow we were 2-1 down. Another fantastic reaction from the boys saw James go
close again with another run and power shot. James started to show the quality
he has, and a weaving run and early shot saw him get us on level terms with a
cracking finish that gave the keeper no chance. Another great cross from David
on the left saw Rudgie go close with a header but it was all square at half time
2-2.
Substitutions and positional changes at half time made us look more fluent. Zac
slotted in well with Brandon and Ross & Danny made their presence felt
immediately; some short, quick passing saw us go close again. A great run and
perfect cross from Tom saw Rudgie in the clear but he couldn’t find the net. We
were on top now and looked unstoppable…but, disaster! Another long ball caught
us napping and a terrific shot from their best player gave our defence and
keeper no chance, 3-2 down with 15 minutes left!
Ross was becoming more influential, breaking up play and threading through some
great balls for the strikers, he repeated this with a ball to Danny and neat
play between him and Rudgie saw Danny slot home 3-3… now for the winner !?
Danny again weaved his way through the defence and a last gasp tackle diverted
the ball, but he quickly turned and crossed a perfect ball for Rudgie who gave
us the lead for the first time in the match with a diving header
(that’s what Rudgie told me to put ! – I thought it was more of a falling
header) Score 3-4.
Chapel heads went down and another great bit of positional sense from Ross and a
perfect pass put James through – only one outcome… GOAL ! 3-5 GAME OVER.
Goals: James 2; Rudgie 2; Danny 1. Man of the match? too many candidates - I’ll
leave that difficult decision to Dave and Howard on Wednesday.
